On January 11th, 2016, I started a daily practice of writing a joke meditation of the day called Cracked Pot Meditations. I was still recovering from the treatment of cancer, and I was having very challenging cognitive issues, so I chose just to put something simple and easy to write every day. Posting it to the blog allowed me to have some accountability. Some of those meditations were poorly written and unedited. I have gone back and begun editing these and adding an illustration, starting with the April 27th meditation. I hope you enjoy.

Meditation for May 25th

Doing Your Passion

You should be able to find and pursue your passion. We all have a rare gift to give this world, and we should be passionate about it. If we love what we do, we do what we love. So go out there and find your passion and do it!

Except that the odds of getting to do what you want to do are totally against you. Unless shit is lined up for you with privilage or with good luck, you are just going to work at a job you don’t really like most days. They fucking made a restaurant chain called TGIF (Thank God It’s Friday) so you know where to go to eat and drink your miserable existence away. I work at a health insurance company, which is not what I dreamed about as a kid.

If you are reading this and you say, “Hey! I’m doing what I love! So Dave must be wrong!” First, I am a published meditation expert, so my being wrong is hardly the issue. You are either incredibly blessed by the gods or a privileged life, or more than likely, you are lying to yourself so you don’t jump off a bridge. Remember, I didn’t become a beloved meditation author by being wrong.

90.7% of people don’t get to do what they want for their life career. 50% of the 9.3% are only 75% sure they want to do what they are doing 1/3 of the time. 15% of every 25% of the 50% of the 9.3% are recovering alcoholic addicts, so they assume they want to be recovery counselors.

Before a person becomes part of the 90.7% who don’t get to do what they want, they spend their time figuring out what they want to do. Either they are just unimpressed by most things or overstimulated by every possible thing and try to live as much as possible, but make sure you know how busy they are by telling you often how busy they are. They are busy. Busy. They woke up and then and then and then and then and then and then and then and then and then and then and then and then and then and then and then and then…

…and if they are anything like me, they are sitting in front of the TV with a string of drool hanging down, binge watching Ink Masters and wishing they were motivated to do one of the many passions they have.

Many of the 90.7% never found what they sought because A. They didn’t listen, and I mean listen, to the U2 song “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” and 2. They kept getting distracted by Facebook, reality shows, and articles on how to enjoy the latest fad without being an asshole—or at least an asshole in a certain way, but fine being an asshole in other ways, and just wanting to always be with people all the time.

Have you ever noticed that judgmental people, the most, have the clearest idea of what they want?

Prayer

Plutus,

I want to be really into something.

I want to feel a passion for something and then do it.

I don’t want to start doing what I want to do and either lose interest or ambition.

I am afraid of hard work.

It’s hard.

I want to do something where I don’t have to work up too early,

But I don’t want to stay at work too late,

I want weekends off,

I want to be able to go on vacation whenever I want,

And I don’t want to lose money when I do go on vacation.

I want to do something crafty.

Nah, too time-consuming.

I want to live off of art.

Too scared to try and take that risk.

I want to work a little for a lot of money,

But that would require fucking people over.

I guess I’ll go to my job, I have now.

I’ll get a hobby.

Amen.

Craft

Get a hobby. It’s a lot like doing what you want without the stress of trying to live off of it.

Goal

Sometimes, just going to work is good enough. You might get to do what you want, but maybe things will get in the way of finding your passion.
