On January 11th, 2016, I started a daily practice of writing a joke meditation of the day called Cracked Pot Meditations. I was still recovering from the treatment of cancer, and I was having very challenging cognitive issues, so I chose just to put something simple and easy to write every day. Posting it to the blog allowed me to have some accountability. Some of those meditations were poorly written and unedited. I have gone back and begun editing these and adding an illustration, starting with the April 27th meditation. I hope you enjoy.

Meditation for May 24th

Following a Different Drum Beat

“If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.”  -Thoreau

In today’s hip culture, it does not pay to be an individual. People want to be safely part of a pack. There are strict guidelines about how music sounds, what clothes one wears, and where one can and can’t hang out. No one is an individual anymore.

If a person is not a part of a crowd, they become a suspect or a square. A man wearing shorts and white socks will be laughed at because that person has no idea that everyone should wear black or patterned socks when they wear Tevas.

These crowds of people bring nothing new or exciting. They look back at the forefathers of their respective movements and try to replicate. Broadening creative horizons or taking art to a new, scary level is too much for anyone. This is why there is nothing new. Fear dictates the narrow guidelines of any movement.

Only the one who shakes off the fear of being left by the pack will make anything thought-provoking or special. Only the person who loves the art more than people will drive the art to new levels, but sadly, no one loves being alone enough to take these chances. No one wants to create what won’t be consumed.

How do you know if you are a pack human or not? Do you show up at places that are busy or have a line? Does it seem like everyone is wearing the same clothes as you? Do you shit talk those that can’t seem to fit in? Do you often say, “Yeah, me too!”? If you answer yes to these questions, you are a pack animal.

Prayer

Saint Dymphna,

Here I am at this party,

And I regret my choice to wear the Tupac shirt.

Everyone else is wearing band shirts on which the band name is impossible to read because the lettering is spiked and twisted.

At least I’m also wearing all black.

I laugh along with everyone else when the DJ puts on Poison,

But in reality Poison is one of my favorite bands and still better than the shit these people play in there bands.

But I don’t want anyone to know that I like a band in a non-ironic way.

It started ironically,

But then I realized that it was all easier to listen to then the sludgy death stoner crap everyone plays now.

Is that guy reading my mind?

Because if he is,

I would want to die.

He’s so cooooool looking and so hot.

H-O-X-X-X-T

I guess I’ll smoke again.

And again.

And again.

And again.

And again.

And again.

This guy wants to incorporate more anthem metal themes into his music.

While this girl wants to bring a more epic fantasy vibe to her music.

BOOOOOORRRRRRRRIIIIIINNNNNGGGGGG!

But I smile and say you can’t wait to hear it.

I wish something exciting would happen.

Twenty-first century be damned with all its progresses,

It hasn’t been fascinating so far.

Amen.

Craft

Make something interesting. Do as I say, not as I do.
