This is the first meditation I wrote when I decided to write a meditation a day for a year. I was deeply inspired by the death of David Bowie, who died the day before I wrote this.
Meditation for January 12th
Transformation
Regarding David Bowie, who passed away from cancer, we are going to talk about transformation. David Bowie reinvented himself many times over his career. You are a beautiful and kind soul. There has been no one like you before, and no one will be like you in the future. It took millions of years for you to reach this point, for you to exist the way you do. Everything you like, your personality, your cute little neurosis, and the way you look are products of evolution and cultural shifts. But are you bored with being you?
Transform into something different. You can be more like other people if you try. No one likes a unique snowflake. Snowflakes melt, and no one can see the differences anyway without a powerful microscope. There are half a dozen human templates for you to fit into. People are wary of eccentrics. If you are easier to understand, you will get along much better.
Do you want to be lonely? Do you want to grow up to be a wretched cat person with no one coming over for Thanksgiving? Do you want to be that person who walks into a social situation and everyone shuts up, just staring at you with polite, forced smiles? The answer, unless you really, really hate yourself, is no. You want to get along.
So transform into something we all feel comfortable with. Tone down your opinions, quiet the loud clothing, and stop the unique nonsense and transform. Just like what other people like, and you will no longer be alone.
David Bowie knew that if he was going to stay relevant, he had to mold himself to what was desired at the time. He knew how to remain commodifiable.
Prayer of the Day
God,
Hello?
It’s me, (your name here)
I don’t think this is the me that you intended,
Please give me the strength to go out from you,
as someone who your children can accept,
So I can feel your Love through their compliments and acceptance.
Lord,
If that’s your name,
Please help me find myself in this magazine,
and give me the power and finances to carry out that look,
in your name, whatever that really is,
Amen.
P.S. Give me money and lots of it. (Hint: Powerball)
Craft
Make an ideal board. Take pictures from magazines, newspapers, or even print photos of your heroes’ Facebook profiles and make a collage of who you want to transform into. Pay more attention to your exterior, and your personality and morals will follow suit.
Cut out what your bookshelf should look like, what your music collection should be, and what your clothes closet would look like if any of consequence came over for the first time. Don’t forget diet and political beliefs.
Goals
Save up money for tattoos to put on your forearms. Keep your forearms hidden, even if it gets really hot, until they are fully covered. Don’t get anything ugly; no one likes ugly arm tattoos.
Don’t get any face tattoos now. If you hadn’t gotten them between the years 1994 and 1999, then it is too late.
