Meditation for November 10th
The Three Wise Men
In the book of Matthew, three kings, or magi, came to the birth of Jesus to give him gifts and acknowledge him as the King of Kings.
Who were these magi? Where did they come from, and what happened to them?
One comes from Yemen, another from India, and the third from even further east, across the distance to America by way of Russia.
They bring the messiah child three gifts: myrrh, frankincense, and gold. The myrrh symbolizes the ability to transform. Frankincense represents the ability to create poetry, the language of the gods. Gold represents the immortality of one’s work.
A few notes on the three wise men: they didn’t just visit one messiah and were never seen or heard of again, but they have travelled through the centuries, trying to inspire many messiahs and prophets.
Their whole job is to make sure man has hope. They sing, write, and perform to ensure that civilization keeps going.
They say that these wise men come from the original men. These were the men before the men above saw the women below and lay down with them, as stated in the book Genesis.
Over the years, these men have taken many forms. Beethoven, Mozart, Lord Byron, Shelly, Shakespeare, and many other musicians, artists, and performers.
If these three men were to die, humans would cease to hope. The very idea of carrying on would crumble. There would be no inspired messiahs or prophets promising salvation or redemption.
And then in 2016, someone found out who the three magi were and dispatched them. First David Bowie. Then Prince. Finally, Leonard Cohen.
Now the clock ticks towards the end. No messiah or prophet will be inspired. We will not see the point in anything.
The world is hungry for a song, but hears the cacophony of lies and hopelessness instead.
Prince was gold. He wrote songs that are now immortal. David Bowie was myrrh. He could transform and re-transform. Leonard Cohen was frankincense. He wrote the sweetest poetry.
Now a baby is crying in a manger, and there are no gifts, no inspiration, no point to save mankind.
